Everything to know about the Rijks Collection

What is the Rijks Collection?

Inspired by timeless Dutch design, and the collection where our modular system started. A base in marble or travertine, in small, medium or large, with a top in frosted glass or linen that twists off by hand. Change the shade and the lamp changes with it, which is why it is built to stay rather than to be replaced. The design was recognised with an iF Design Award, and the wider system is the modular collection.

Which stones can I choose?

Travertine in Silver, Classic, Travertino Classico and Red, each with the open, banded look that stone takes on when it forms layer by layer. Marble from the quiet Bianco Statuarietto and Rosa Aurora to the purple-veined Calacatta Viola, the deep black Nero Marquina, Dark Emperador, Rosso Levanto, Verde Alpi, Ice Green, Arabescato, Lilac, Blue Calcite and the warm glow of Honey Onyx. The stone is named on every product page, so you always know which block your lamp came out of.

Glass or linen?

Glass throws a brighter, more defined pool and lets you see the shape of the shade itself, so the lamp still reads as an object when it is off. Linen does the opposite: it softens the light, warms it on the way through, and keeps the weave visible. Most of the collection wears glass and a third wears linen, and the same base takes either, so it is a choice you are allowed to change your mind about.

Which sizes are there?

Small, Medium and Large, running from 13 to 26 centimetres high. Small suits a nightstand or a shelf, Medium is the everyday size for a side table, and Large holds a console or a sideboard.

How long does one last on a charge?

Depending on the size the battery is 5000, 6000 or 8000 mAh. That gives 10 to 100 hours on most models and 15 to 120 on the largest, depending on how bright you set them. Charging is over USB-C and the runtime is on every product page.

Can I change the shade later?

That is the whole point of it. You hold the base, give the shade a turn, and it lifts off in a second. No tools, no wiring, nothing to unscrew. A new shade costs a fraction of a new lamp, so a broken shade or a change of taste does not end the lamp; it just gives it a different summer. They are all listed in the lampshades collection.

What is the difference with the Nordic Collection?

Stone against wood. The Rijks bases are cut from marble and travertine, so they are heavy and cool to the touch. The Nordic Collection turns its bases from wood, which is warmer to hold and lighter to carry. The shades are made for both, so a shade you buy here fits a Nordic base just as well.

Can I use one outside?

Out to the terrace for an evening, yes. Left outside, no. These are rated IP20 and belong indoors, and stone and frost do not go together. For a lamp that stays out under cover, the metal lamps are rated IP54.

A Tavellio tag with the iF Design Award label in the pocket of polka dot trousers

THE TAG SAYS iF DESIGN AWARD

The award is not for a shape but for an idea: a lamp whose shade comes off, so it can change instead of being replaced. That is the whole of the modular collection in one sentence.

STONE DOES NOT WOBBLE

The base is cut from a solid block of marble or travertine, so the lamp stays where you put it instead of sliding across a table. That weight is also why it reads as an object rather than a gadget.
