Everything to know about travertine lamps

What is travertine?

A natural stone formed where mineral-rich water comes to the surface, layer by layer, over thousands of years. That is where the warm colour and the soft banding come from, and why no two blocks are quite alike.

Which travertines do you use?

Silver Travertine, Travertino Classico and Red Travertine. Silver runs cool and grey, Classico is the warm beige most people picture, and Red is a deep rust with heavy banding. The stone is named on every product page.

Why does travertine have small holes in it?

Those pits are the stone itself, left by gas escaping while it formed. They are not a flaw and they are not filled in, because they are the reason travertine reads as stone from across a room rather than as a smooth surface.

Will my lamp look exactly like the photo?

Close, never identical. Every base is cut from a different part of the block, so the banding and the pitting land differently each time. Two lamps of the same stone belong together without being copies.

Can I change the shade?

On the modular models, yes. The shade lifts off the travertine base, and the same base can carry glass, a linen blend or 3D-printed porcelain. The shades are sold on their own in the lampshades collection.

How long does a travertine lamp last on a charge?

Between 10 and 100 hours on most models, and 15 to 120 hours on the ones with an 8000 mAh battery, depending on how bright you set them. Charging is over USB-C, and the runtime of each model is on its own product page.

Can a travertine lamp be used outside?

Take it out for the evening and bring it back in, that is what a cordless lamp is for. These models are rated IP20, so they are not built to stay outside: rain, frost and a night in the damp are all bad for the electronics, and travertine is porous enough to drink up whatever it stands in. For a lamp that stays out under cover, the metal lamps are rated IP54.

How do you look after travertine?

A soft, damp cloth is enough. Keep vinegar, lemon and abrasive pads away from it, because acid eats into the stone. Wipe up oil and wine quickly rather than letting them sit, since the open structure takes up liquid faster than the marble lamps do.

MODULAR BY DESIGN

Most of these lamps take an interchangeable shade, so the same travertine base can carry glass, a linen blend or 3D-printed porcelain.
