Everything to know about the Modular Collection

What does modular mean here?

The base and the shade are separate pieces. You choose a base in one of three sizes, choose a shade to sit on it, and put the two together. Later you can change the shade without changing the lamp, which is how one base ends up looking different in summer than it does in winter.

Which sizes are there?

Small, Medium and Large, running from about 13 to 26 centimetres high. Small suits a bedside table or a shelf, Medium is the everyday size for a dining or side table, and Large has enough presence for a console or a sideboard.

Which bases can I choose?

Wood, marble, travertine and onyx, in more than twenty finishes. The wood runs from light brown through chestnut and walnut to black. The stone runs from the pale banding of Silver Travertine and Classic Travertine to Dark Emperador, Nero Marquina, Rosso Levanto, Verde Alpi and the warm glow of Honey Onyx. Each base is cut from natural material, so no two are identical. They are gathered by material in marble lamps, travertine lamps and the wooden lamp collection.

Which shades can I choose?

Clear glass, frosted glass and a linen blend, in shapes that change the light as much as they change the look. Clear glass throws a brighter, more defined pool; frosted and linen spread it softly. They are all sold on their own in the lampshades collection.

Does every shade fit every base?

A lot of it fits together, which is the whole point of the system. The shades are made for the bases of the Rijks Collection, the Nordic Collection, the Maera Collection and the Levora Collection, and every new collection is built on the same system. You match the shade to the size of the base. Every shade page names the bases it belongs to, so you can check a pairing before you order. Combinations we have already put together are in Mix & Match.

Can I buy a shade separately later?

Yes, and that is the point of the system. A new shade costs a fraction of a new lamp, so a change of mind or a broken shade does not end the lamp. You keep the base you chose and give it something else to wear.

How long does a modular lamp last on a charge?

Depending on the size, the battery is 5000, 6000 or 8000 mAh. That gives 10 to 100 hours on most models and up to 120 on the largest, depending on how bright you set them. Charging is over USB-C and the runtime is listed on every product page.

Why choose modular instead of a normal lamp?

Because the lamp can change while the light stays the same. One base carries a different shade for a different season or a different room, and the battery, the dimming and the electronics stay exactly what they were. The Rijks Collection, built on this system, was recognised with an iF Design Award.

CHOOSE A BASE. CHOOSE A SHADE

Three sizes, rubberwood or stone for the base, and glass or linen above it. You build the lamp instead of picking one off a shelf.

AWARDED FOR THE IDEA

The Rijks Collection, built on this same modular system, was recognised with an iF Design Award. The lamp you assemble uses it too.
