Everything to know about alabaster lamps

What is alabaster?

A natural stone, soft enough to be cut thin and translucent enough to let light pass straight through it. That is unusual: most stone stops light at the surface. Cut down to a few millimetres, alabaster carries it.

Is the shade really stone?

Yes, the whole shade is cut from a block of alabaster, not moulded from glass or resin. You notice it in the weight when you lift the lamp, and you see it in the veining, which runs differently through every single shade.

How does alabaster change the light?

It makes the shade the light source. Where glass keeps a clean outline and porcelain lights up along a printed relief, alabaster glows all over and shows its own grain while it does. Switch it off and it is a piece of stone; switch it on and the stone becomes the lamp.

Which bases can I choose?

Marble in Calacatta Viola, Bianco Statuarietto, Rosa Aurora, Verde Alpi and Calacatta Vionaro, travertine in Red, Silver and Classic, or wood. Two stones on one lamp, one carrying the weight and the other carrying the light.

Can I change the shade?

Yes. The alabaster shade twists off by hand, the same fitting we use across the range, so it can also sit on a Rijks or Nordic base. The shades are sold on their own in the lampshades collection, and the system behind it is the modular collection.

How long does one last on a charge?

The smaller models carry 5000 mAh and run 10 to 100 hours; the larger ones carry 8000 mAh and reach 15 to 120. Three light colours, from a very warm 2200K through 2700K to a neutral 4000K, and charging is over USB-C.

Will my lamp look exactly like the photo?

Close, never identical. Every shade is cut from a different part of the block, so the veining lands somewhere else each time and the glow follows it. Two lamps of the same model belong together without being copies.

What is the difference with the other collections?

The shade. In the Rijks Collection it is glass or linen, in the Maera Collection it is printed porcelain, and here it is stone. The bases overlap, the fitting is the same, and the light is what sets them apart.

STONE THAT LETS LIGHT THROUGH

The shade is alabaster, cut thin enough for the light to pass through the stone itself. That is why it glows rather than shines, and why the veining only shows up once the lamp is on. See the lampshades.

TWO STONES, ONE LAMP

A base cut from marble or travertine, and above it a shade cut from alabaster. One carries the weight and stays cool under your hand; the other carries the light.
