Everything to know about black table lamps

What is Nero Marquina marble?

Nero Marquina is a black marble with fine white veins. The name refers to Markina, a town in the Basque Country of Spain. Against the deep black, every white vein stands out clearly; see all black marble table lamps.

What makes black marble black?

Carbon-rich organic material that was pressed into the stone before it turned to marble. The white veins are calcite that later filled fine cracks, which is why the lines in Nero Marquina look so sharp and bright against the dark background.

What is rubberwood?

Rubberwood is the wood of the rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis, a pale hardwood that is usually harvested once the trees no longer produce latex. The black wooden lamps use it for their base, and you will find it throughout the Nordic Collection.

What is the difference between a black marble and a black wooden base?

Weight, touch and pattern. A Nero Marquina base is heavier and cool to the touch, with white veins that differ per piece. A black rubberwood base is lighter and warmer to the touch, with a smooth matt black surface. The marble bases carry the modular shades of the Rijks Collection.

Which black lamps are protected against splashing water?

The lamps rated IP44 or IP54. IP44 means protection against splashing water from any direction, and IP54 adds protection against dust. Many black wooden lamps are IP44 and black metal lamps are IP54, while the Nero Marquina lamps are IP20. Each product page shows the rating.

Which black lamps have a 3D-printed porcelain shade?

The black lamps in the Maera Collection, on a base of Nero Marquina or black rubberwood. The porcelain is 3D-printed into sculpted forms, and when the lamp is lit the white shade stands out sharply against the black base.

Which black lamps have an alabaster shade?

Those in the Levora Collection. Alabaster is a translucent natural stone, so the shade glows with its own pale veining, on a base of black marble or black rubberwood.

How do I care for a black marble or black wooden base?

On black marble, acids such as lemon or vinegar leave dull, pale marks that show clearly on the dark polish, so wipe spills straight away and use a pH-neutral stone cleaner. For black rubberwood, a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is enough; avoid soaking the wood or using solvents.
