Lamp specifications are full of numbers that sound important and explain nothing. Watts, lumens, Kelvin, mAh. If you have ever wondered whether a rechargeable lamp will actually be bright enough, this is the page that answers it.
Watts are not brightness (not any more)
People still ask for a 40-watt bulb, but watts only ever measured energy use, not light. With old filament bulbs the two happened to line up, so the habit stuck. LEDs broke that link completely: a modern LED produces the same light for a fraction of the power. So with any rechargeable lamp, ignore watts. The number that matters is lumens.
Lumens: how much light
Lumens (lm) measure the total amount of visible light a lamp puts out. More lumens means brighter. As a reference point, a traditional 40-watt bulb produced roughly 400-450 lumens, and a 60-watt bulb around 800.
Here is what you actually need, by situation.

These are practical guidelines, not rules. The useful insight is that most of what a table lamp does needs far less light than people expect. Dinner-table atmosphere sits at the very bottom of that table, which is why a lamp that seems modest on paper can be exactly right in the room.
Why the same lamp looks different in two rooms
Lumens describe the lamp, not the effect, and three things change the effect completely.
Distance. Light falls away fast, far faster than most people assume. Double the distance between the lamp and what you are lighting and you are left with roughly a quarter of the light. A modest lamp close to you beats a bright one across the room, which is precisely why table and wall lamps do so much with so little.
The shade. A frosted glass or fabric shade softens and spreads light in every direction; an opaque shade pushes it down into a pool on the table. Same lumens, entirely different room.
The room itself. Pale walls bounce light around and make a space feel twice as lit. Dark walls, wood and stone swallow it. A lamp that is perfect in a white bedroom can disappear in a dark green study.
Kelvin: what kind of light
Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K) and it decides the mood entirely. Low numbers are warm and yellow; high numbers are cool and blue-white.

This is why two lamps with identical lumens can feel completely different. Warm light at low output reads as cosy; the same output at 6000K reads as clinical. As a rule of thumb, the later the hour, the lower the Kelvin.
Why dimming beats a big number
A lamp with one fixed output can only ever be right in one situation. A lamp you can dim is right in all of them: bright enough to read by when you want it, and down at candle level when the plates are cleared. That flexibility is worth far more than a headline lumen figure.
There is also a practical reason on a rechargeable lamp: brightness is what drains the battery. Running at full output might give you around ten hours; dimmed low, the same battery can run for a hundred hours or more. Dimming is not just a mood setting, it is what turns an evening of light into a week of it.
Watch out for one trick here. Some cheap lamps advertise "3 colours" that are really just three brightness steps of a single LED, the same tone at 30%, 50% and 100%. Genuine colour temperatures and genuine dimming are two separate features, and a good lamp has both.
How to read a rechargeable lamp's spec sheet
Five things tell you almost everything, in this order. Colour temperature range, because it decides what the lamp is for. Whether it truly dims, and not just in three steps. Runtime, and at which setting, since "120 hours" and "10 hours" are usually the same lamp at opposite ends. Battery capacity in mAh, as a sanity check on those runtime claims. And the IP rating, which decides whether it can go on a terrace or in a bathroom at all.
Notice what is missing from that list: a single headline brightness number. It is the least useful figure on the page.
