Christmas Table Decorations: How to Style a Festive Table with Marble and Cordless Light

In short

A beautiful Christmas table is built in five layers: a calm base, one centrepiece on a stone tray, low warm light, coasters under the glasses, and a small detail at every place. Keep the centrepiece and lamps under about 25 to 30 cm so guests can see each other, use one small cordless lamp per two to four guests, and keep cut fruit and wine off bare marble. Travertine and marble trays make the centrepiece look intentional and protect the table at the same time.

The Christmas table is the one piece of styling everyone sees up close, for hours. It is also the one most people build in a rush, on the afternoon itself, with whatever is in the cupboard.

It does not have to be complicated. The tables that look effortless almost always follow the same structure: five layers, a clear centre, and light at the right height. Here is how to build one, step by step.

Layer 1: a calm base

Start with the surface. A bare wooden table, a linen cloth or a simple runner in one colour. Resist the patterned Christmas tablecloth: the table is going to fill up with plates, glasses, greenery and food, and a busy base makes everything look cluttered.

Good bases: natural linen, a deep green or oxblood runner on bare wood, or simply a well-oiled wooden table with nothing on it at all.

Layer 2: one centrepiece, on a tray

The single most effective trick for a festive table: put the centrepiece on a tray. Loose pine branches, ornaments and fruit scattered down a table look like leftovers. The same objects grouped on a stone tray look like a composition.

A round Noma tray (Ø 30 cm) is made for this. Fill it with:

  • a few cuttings of pine, eucalyptus or olive branches,
  • two or three baubles in one colour,
  • something with height, such as a small lamp or a single branch,
  • and leave part of the stone visible.

For a long table, use a rectangular Nori tray in the centre, or two Noma trays spaced along the table. For deeper, richer colours, choose Noma in emperador dark marble. Our guide on how to style stone trays explains the stylist's rules behind this: odd numbers, varied heights and leaving a gap.

Keep it low. A centrepiece should stay under roughly 25 to 30 cm, so guests can see and talk to each other across the table. Tall arrangements belong on the sideboard.

One insider tip. Oranges, clementines and cranberries look wonderful on a Christmas table, but cut citrus and other acidic juices can leave dull marks on marble and travertine. Keep whole fruit on the tray, or put cut fruit on a small plate first. Our marble care guide explains why.

Layer 3: low, warm light

This is the layer that turns a table into an evening. The light should be warm, low and spread along the table.

  • How many lamps? One small lamp for two to four guests. Two for a table of six. Three in a row for eight or more.
  • How tall? Under about 25 cm in the middle of the table, so nobody has to look around it.
  • Which colour? Candle-warm, around 2200 to 2700K, dimmed.

Small cordless lamps such as the Metsu Small, Cuyp Small or Dou Small are ideal: no cable crossing the tablecloth, and they last the whole evening. The full rules are in our dining table lighting guide.

Planning to use real candles between pine branches and paper napkins? Think twice. A cordless lamp gives the same glow without the open flame. We compare the options in flameless candles vs cordless lamps.

Layer 4: coasters under every glass

Christmas dinners are long, glasses get refilled, and red wine rings are the most common souvenir of a good evening. Stone coasters protect the table and look like part of the setting rather than an afterthought.

The organic Li coasters suit natural, rustic tables; the square Fi coasters suit modern, graphic ones. Match the stone of your coasters to your centrepiece tray, and the whole table suddenly reads as one design. More in our guide to stone coasters.

Layer 5: a detail at every place

The final layer is personal. A small detail at each place setting makes every guest feel expected.

  • A sprig of rosemary tied around the napkin.
  • A handwritten name card.
  • Or our favourite: a small Yuma tray (Ø 15 cm) at each place, holding a name card and a chocolate or a small ornament. It doubles as a gift guests can take home, which also solves the question of what to give your guests.

Three colour stories that always work

Warm classic. Beige travertine trays and coasters, deep green branches, gold baubles, warm white light. Timeless and calm.

Rich and dark. Emperador dark marble, oxblood or burgundy napkins, brass details, candle-warm light. Perfect for long winter dinners.

Modern and unexpected. The violet-veined Yuma in Calacatta Viola, plum and grey tones, silver details, white flowers. Striking without being loud.

Round tables and small tables

Round table: one centrepiece in the middle on a Noma tray, kept low, with one small lamp on it or right beside it. Everything else radiates outwards. On a round table, a centrepiece above 25 cm blocks everyone at once.

Small table or apartment dinner: skip the centrepiece and let one small lamp on a Yuma tray be the centre. One object, beautifully lit, is enough.

The simple version (when you have twenty minutes)

  1. Clear the table completely.
  2. One tray in the middle with greenery and one small lamp.
  3. Coasters at every place.
  4. Ceiling light off, table lamp on, dimmed.

That is a festive table. Everything else is a bonus.

After dinner

Because the lamps are cordless, the evening does not end when the plates are cleared. Move the lamps to the sideboard or the coffee table, and the glow follows the guests to the sofa. For more ideas for the darker months, read our guide to cosy lighting for dark evenings.

Frequently asked questions

How do I decorate a Christmas table simply?

Use one centrepiece on a tray in the middle, a small warm lamp, and coasters at every place. Keep the base plain, stick to one or two colours and switch off the ceiling light.

What is a good centrepiece for a dining table at Christmas?

A low arrangement on a round stone tray: a few pine or eucalyptus branches, two or three baubles in one colour and a small lamp, with part of the tray left visible. Keep it under about 25 to 30 cm so guests can see each other.

How tall should a Christmas table centrepiece be?

Under roughly 25 to 30 cm. Anything taller blocks eye contact and conversation across the table and belongs on a sideboard instead.

How do I protect a marble table at Christmas?

Use coasters under every glass, put cut citrus and other acidic food on plates rather than on bare stone, and wipe spills straight away. Acids such as wine, lemon and vinegar can leave dull marks on marble.

How do I light a Christmas table without candles?

Use small cordless table lamps with warm, dimmable light: one per two to four guests, under about 25 cm tall. They give a candle-like glow without an open flame near greenery and paper napkins.
