Everything to know about brown alabaster candle holders

What gives brown alabaster its colour?

Iron, laid down while the stone was forming. The same layering that colours it also draws the bands through it, which is why the tone and the pattern always arrive together and why no two blocks give the same piece.

Why does it look so different when it is lit?

Because the light travels through the layers rather than across them. The thin bands glow pale, the dense ones hold the light back, and a stone that reads as plain brown by day turns closer to amber in the evening.

Is the pattern the same in every holder?

No, and it is not meant to be. The block decides where the bands fall and how heavily they run. The piece that arrives is never the piece in the photograph, which is the part people either love or should buy glass instead.

Can you build a set around brown?

Brown is the tone that carries a group: the banding gives every piece its own drawing while the colour keeps them together. Add one pale piece if you want contrast, or take a grouping that is already balanced under alabaster candle holder sets.

Which light goes inside?

An LED tea light of your own. A flame is the thing to keep away: the heat can split a stone that is soft and thinly cut, and the soot lays a grey veil over the warm tone. More on living with the stone under alabaster candle holders.

Does brown work in a cool room?

It becomes the warm accent instead of the quiet one, which is a different job but a good one. In a warm room with oak, linen or terracotta it simply belongs.

How do you care for it?

A soft dry cloth, no water left standing, and no acidic cleaners. Alabaster sits at one to two on the Mohs scale, under marble and well under granite, so it prefers to be left alone rather than scrubbed.

How does it compare with the white stone?

Deeper and more drawn. White stays pale and even, brown turns amber and shows its layers. Side by side under white alabaster candle holders.

HONEY, NOT ORANGE

The brown runs warm rather than bright, so a group reads as one tone instead of a row of different browns.

CUT FROM A BLOCK LIKE THIS

The banding that appears once the light is on was laid down long before the stone was carved. No block gives the same piece twice.
