A cheap lamp from Temu looks like a bargain, until the battery fades and the light yellows. Here's what's really inside, why it matters, and how a well-made lamp works out cheaper.

We get it: a rechargeable lamp for a few euros is tempting. But there's a reason it's that cheap, and it's usually hidden on the inside. A season later the battery barely holds, the colour has drifted, and you're ordering another one. The old saying fits: goedkoop is duurkoop, cheap turns out expensive.


What you can't see in the photo

A product photo looks the same whether a lamp costs five euros or fifty; the difference is in the parts you never see. To hit a rock-bottom price, a cheap lamp uses a small, low-grade battery that loses capacity within months, budget LEDs that dim and shift colour over time (and sometimes flicker), and a glued plastic housing that can't be opened or repaired. There's rarely a felt base to protect your table, and often no real water resistance, so a single splash is the end of it. It isn't built to last; it's built to be replaced.

We design and build both the outside and the inside. The shape is ours, but so are the internals: our own battery technology (for example 5200 mAh in Tess and Tessa) that actually holds its charge over years, our own LED technology with a stable, flicker-free warm-to-cool light, a metal body instead of thin plastic, a felt base that protects your furniture, and IP54 ratings so a splash is no problem.
